What is the Community Oncology Alliance Political Action Committee (COA PAC)?
The Community Oncology Alliance Political Action Committee (PAC) is a political action committee founded by community oncologists for community oncology. Funds raised within COA PAC are used primarily to contribute to campaigns of candidates seeking elected office to the United States Senate and House of Representatives. COA PAC supports individuals who have demonstrated an interest in community cancer care and in preserving and enhancing the nation’s cancer care delivery system for the patients we serve.
The COA PAC is particularly important as we enter what is turning out to be an extremely competitive 2018 election cycle where 468 seats in the Congress are up for election – 33 in the Senate and all 435 in the House. It is going to be an extremely competitive year and the COA PAC must be poised to ensure the voice of community oncology is heard.
If you want elected officials who support community oncology and the patients served, you need to support their campaigns. COA PAC is the only independent PAC dedicated solely to community oncology.
A suggested initial contribution to the COA PAC is at least $1,000; however, many oncologists have made an initial contribution of $2,000. Contributions cannot exceed $5,000 per year. COA PAC has a Community Oncology Leadership Club that recognizes contributions as follows:
- Diamond Level – Contribute $5000 per calendar year or $416.66 monthly (automatic credit card withdrawl)
- Platinum Level – Contribute $2,000 per year or $166.66 monthly
- Gold Level – Contribute $1,000 per year or $83.33 monthly
- Silver Level – Contribute $500 per year or $41.66 monthly
Community oncologists need to be far more active as evidenced by the list below of the top health care professional PACs in 2016. COA PAC ranked last behind many other more specialized areas of medicine. We make the most of the funds raised, but community oncology is still lagging far behind many other areas of medicine in making an impact. It is up to you and your fellow oncologists to contribute to increase support for community oncology.
Community oncology needs to have both a national and local presence. Other physicians do exactly the same — that is, support individual, local candidates for election — but they also support national PACs. The COA PAC allows us to extend this support nationally.
COA PAC contributions can be made using a credit card or by personal check. To make a secure contribution by using a credit card, go to the COA PAC website at communityoncology.org/advocacy/pac/ and click on the Donate button. If you would like to pay by personal check, please make it payable to COA PAC and mail it to:
