Form of Organization and Tax Status
COA is a not-for-profit corporation that has been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt entity described in section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code. Grants to COA are not deductible for federal income tax purposes as charitable contributions but may be deducted as business expenses.
Governance
Oversight of the activities of COA is performed by a Board of Directors, which currently includes medical oncologists and practice administrators/CEOs from community cancer practices across the country, as listed on the masthead on page 1. All of these individuals are involved in the delivery of cancer care on a daily basis in the community setting, so they live and understand the issues that affect the lives of the millions of Americans in this country battling cancer.
The Executive Officers of COA are also listed on the masthead on page 1, as are the two Executive Directors who direct daily operations. The Chief Administrative Officer is the one executive, full-time, paid position within COA. There is a need for a full-time person to direct all of the administrative activities of COA.
Legal Counsel
COA is represented by the law firm of Blank Rome LLP, with primary offices in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, and New York, NY.
Custody of Funds
COA maintains a bank account at SouthTrust Bank in Memphis, TN. Funds are deposited within twenty-four hours of receipt. Funds are disbursed as needed for expenses in accordance with the mission of COA.
